Spiral Vibration Damper

Spiral Vibration Damper

The Spiral Vibration Damper is a passive vibration suppression device designed primarily for overhead transmission lines (especially high-voltage/EHV conductors). It prevents conductor fatigue damage caused by wind-induced vibrations (e.g., aeolian vibration, subspan oscillation).

Product Overview

The Spiral Vibration Damper is a passive vibration suppression device designed primarily for overhead transmission lines (especially high-voltage/EHV conductors). It prevents conductor fatigue damage caused by wind-induced vibrations (e.g., aeolian vibration, subspan oscillation).

Spiral Vibration Dampers play a crucial role in maintaining the stability and longevity of overhead power line systems by minimizing the impact of vibrations and ensuring reliable electrical transmission or distribution. These dampers consist of a spiral-shaped metal or composite rod that is attached to the conductor or the supporting hardware of the power line. Additionally, they are manufactured from high-impact PVC, formed in a helical shape to work with a variety of ADSS fiber diameters.

High-impact Weather resistant PVC

Aeolian vibration mitigation

Working Principle:

It features one or more spiral-shaped elastic bodies (typically made of weather-resistant polymers like silicone rubber, EPDM, or polyurethane) helically wound around the conductor. Instead of a tuned mass-spring system, it operates by:

Altering Local Stiffness & Damping: Increases local bending stiffness at installation points and leverages the material's high inherent damping to dissipate vibrational energy.

Disrupting Wave Propagation: Its spiral geometry breaks up and disperses standing/traveling waves along the conductor, preventing energy accumulation.

Aerodynamic Interference (in some designs): Surface protrusions disrupt airflow, reducing vortex shedding regularity.

Target Vibrations:

Suppresses low-frequency (3–150 Hz), small-amplitude, high-cycle vibrations to prevent fatigue failure at suspension clamps, spacer dampers, and other fixation points.

Key Features

Helical Coil Structure: Single or double spiral design, uniformly wound around the conductor.

Advanced Material Properties:

Polymer Elasticity: Silicone rubber, EPDM, or polyurethane with high elasticity, damping loss factor, and extreme weather resistance (UV, ozone, temperature, moisture).

Electrical Insulation: Non-conductive material.

Flame Retardancy: Complies with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ASTM).

Passive Operation: Zero external power/maintenance required.

Rapid Installation: Hand-coiled onto conductors; no specialized tools. Suitable for retrofitting live lines.

Minimal Weight: Negligible impact on conductor sag/tension.

Fatigue-Resistant: Withstands cyclic bending (>20-year service life).

Conductor Compatibility: Adapts to various conductor diameters (customizable sizes).

Non-Damaging: Soft material avoids conductor abrasion; stress-free design.

Wide Temperature Range: Operational from -40°C to +70°C (or higher).

Purpose-Built: Optimized for wind-induced vibrations (aeolian/subspan) in power lines.

Product application

Exclusively used in overhead transmission lines as critical power-line hardware:

Voltage Levels:

High Voltage (HV) & Extra-High Voltage (EHV) systems: 110kV, 220kV, 330kV, 500kV, 750kV, 1000kV.

Critical Installations:

Near Suspension Clamps: Mounted symmetrically (1–2 dampers per side) at vibration anti-nodes (max stress points).

Long Spans: River/canyon crossings prone to intense aeolian vibration.

Subspan Oscillation Zones: Bundled conductor configurations.

High-Risk Sections: Identified via vibration monitoring/analysis.

Conductor Types:

ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced), AAAC (All Aluminum Alloy Conductor), ACSS (Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported), ACCC (Aluminum Conductor Composite Core), OPGW.

Bundled Conductors: Widely applied on sub-conductors in twin, quad, or hex bundles.

Summary

Core Distinction: Unlike Stockbridge-type dampers (tuned mass absorbers), the Spiral Vibration Damper uses helical coiling and viscoelastic damping to suppress low-frequency conductor vibrations.

Industry-Specific: Solely deployed in power transmission networks.

Key Advantage: Cost-effective, maintenance-free protection against conductor fatigue.
